Born in Minnesota. Seeking adventures (and telling the tales) since an early age. My career path started in college, where I launched a media company with no real plan but enough obsession to never blink. ➡️
I learned the hard way and got my hands dirty. As a young writer & journalist, I sought out and met my heroes, and I traveled the world. At age 25, I launched a weekly column on adventure and gear that was syndicated to reach millions.
That platform and brand — GearJunkie — gave me the runway to form a media company of the same name. We bootstrapped the startup to a staff of 20 and offices in Denver and Minneapolis, my home town.
My other arc, starting in my mid-20s, was work with the New York Times. Over two years, I traveled on assignment and published 50+ articles, writing first-person accounts from northern Ontario to the Chiquibul Forest of Belize.
I embraced the lifestyle as an adventure journalist and built a résumé filing stories from expeditions and extreme events like the Arrowhead Ultra and Primal Quest. In 2011, it got deeper as I trained as an endurance athlete for months to then trek to the tip of South America in the infamous Patagonian Expedition Race.
After the New York Times and years on the go, I found a business partner and focused on growing GearJunkie. Over 5 years, we scaled the site to millions of readers — and $millions in revenue — on a playbook of affiliate commerce, video, and direct-sold ads.
GearJunkie was acquired by Lola Digital Media in 2020, a successful exit after years of growth. In 2021, I was tapped to become Executive VP and helped raise $40M to continue growth. Next, I co-led a corporate initiative to relaunch Lola as AllGear Digital.
Today, the LA-based company owns and operates a diverse set of media brands. I remain onboard as an advisor for AllGear and GearJunkie in 2024.
A strong family is the top priority for me. I met my wife at age 17, and we married young. Tara and I have since grown a life together, including 5 kids who rarely slow down. I strive to be a caring husband and engaged dad, including (among a few roles) as a coach for my kids' mountain bike team. We camp, bike, climb, ski, and stay active year-round from our home base in Minnesota.
A passion for exploration & adventure has shaped my career and my life. I've trekked to Mount Everest and climbed volcanos in Iceland. I've run a dozen marathons and ultras up to 50 miles long. From ice climbs in Montana (photo above) to 24+ hour wilderness feats, the outdoors has always inspired and served as a proving grounds for me to push limits in adventure sports.
From the New York Times, where I published 50+ stories, to video projects shot around the planet, the craft of writing and media production is my foundation. I went to journalism school and graduated into a world of print in the early-aughts. With two classmates, I created a quarterly 'zine. Next, I launched GearJunkie as a column syndicated to large daily papers across America. The digital wave took over and I cultivated a new audience online. A playbook of objective reporting and deep product reviews led to scoops, viral hits, and notable awards as we grew GearJunkie from a startup to millions of readers and the top media brand in its space.
As an operator and entrepreneur, and recently as an Executive VP, I have deep experience across all lanes of a modern media company. I launched a creative agency in 2012 (Monopoint Media) and have worked sales on multiple six- and seven-figure deals. In 2021, we raised $40M in capital and closed 7 acquisitions to form AllGear Digital. I speak at industry events and recently gave a keynote on "AI and the future of content." I am an optimist and a hustler, and my scope includes launching, building, and reinventing media companies for 15+ years. Beyond media, I advise startups, angel invest, and am an LP at Groove Capital, an early-stage venture fund.
